Prettiest plants you never need to water

Plants are a great way to decorate your house and add a natural design element. Are you thinking of decorating your home with some pretty plants, but aren’t sure where to start. Maybe you’re new to caring for plants and need something beginner friendly. Or maybe you travel all the time and need something that can go weeks without watering. I have just the plants for you.

I’ve created a list of the prettiest plants you never need to water (well not never, but not for a really long time). Of course no plant can go without any water, but there are plenty of drought resistant plants that don’t need constant watering and actually suffer from overwatering. We are going to start off with many people’s favorite drought resistant plant, the Snake Plant.

Snake plants, also called Sansevieria Trifasciata, are very interesting and beautiful houseplants. Most commonly green with yellow borders, they have sword-like leaves that can range from 6 inches to 8 feet. They can thrive from the dark corners in your home to very brightly lit locations. This plant is fantastic for beginners or for those looking for an easy maintenance plant. Nearly indestructible, snake plants are drought resistant, meaning they don’t need to be watered for weeks at a time. In the winter they can even go months without watering. Just make sure not to overwater these plants. It is one of the biggest mistakes snake plant owners make and it leads to dry rot which can be fatal to your plant.

Having an aloe plant, aka Aloe Barbadensis, in your house can be a beautiful design decision as well as very useful one. The leaves can have medicinal properties that help decrease pain from scrapes or burns. Not only that, but it’s just a classically beautiful plant to have in your home. Aloe Vera is a succulent plant that has thick, green, plump, and fleshy leaves. Although aloe leaves can be used to reduce pain on external wounds, I have to warn you NOT TO EAT IT. It can cause nausea or indigestion. When watering this plant, make sure to not water it until the soil is dry. If you end up underwatering your Aloe, it will thrive. Just make sure to try and water it every 2-3 weeks. Direct sunlight can dry this plant out so leave it in a location with indirect sunlight.

Flaming Katy, also known as Kalanchoe Blossfeldiana, is a beautiful succulent plant that blooms red, orange, yellow, white, purple or pink flowers that last for a few weeks. It grows from 8-15 inches and blooms 1-2 flowers. Flaming Katy only needs to be watered when the soil dries out, which can vary from one to two weeks. You should allow the top 1 inch of soil to dry out before watering and then make sure the soil mix is barely moist.. If you want it to flourish, make sure to give this plant plenty of sunlight. A sunny windowsill that is out of direct sunlight would be ideal for a Flaming Katy to thrive.

The Chinese Evergreen plant, also known as Aglaonema, is a bold and beautiful plant choice for homeowners. This plant is covered in bright colors and bold patterns. Ranging from green, pink, red, silver, yellow to stripes, and speckles, this plant has 100 varieties and can grow up to 20 inches high. Beware though, it is toxic to both humans and pets. So if you have pets, place the plant in a safe location where animals can’t get to it. This plant likes the heat so place it in a warm spot of your home. It’s tolerant to lower-light conditions but bright, shadowless light is ideal. Great news is it doesn’t require constant watering. So keep the soil moist, but don’t let it dry out or vise-versa, get soaking wet.

Bromeliad is a beautiful, slow growing, indoor and outdoor, flowering plant. This plant has gorgeous bracts, which are the brightly covered leaves, often mistaken for a flower. This plant is quite unique compared to the average indoor plant. It would be the perfect showstopper to spruce up your home. Here are a few tips and tricks to make sure this plant lasts you years to come. It is able to withstand a shortage of water, but cannot be overwatered. Make sure you have a pot that provides fast drainage. When considering where to place the bromeliad, try to find places that provide bright light without direct sun exposure. Because there are thousand of variations of Bromeliad, make sure to read the specifications for your particular type of bromeliad to ensure you maintain optimal care habits.
