The Importance of Choosing the Right Agent: Learning from My Mistakes

As someone deeply entrenched in the real estate business now, it’s almost poetic to reflect on my journey—a journey that began with a mistake, a mistake I don’t want others to repeat. Twenty-three years ago, I bought my first home, and it wasn’t the right one. Not physically wrong, mind you, but it didn’t align with my needs. Now, as a real estate agent, I understand the critical importance of asking the right questions and truly listening to the answers.

Back then, as a high school teacher with limited funds, buying a home felt daunting. I had a large family, and gatherings were a regular affair. However, despite my realtor knowing this, the right questions weren’t asked. I ended up hastily choosing a house based on superficial factors—the neighborhood, the appearance—without considering the practicalities of how I lived.

Sitting on the bare floors of my new home, surrounded by emptiness, the weight of my mistake hit me. There was no space for family gatherings, no parking for guests, and a backyard too small for entertainment. It wasn’t the home I needed; it was the home I thought I wanted, fueled by misconceptions and lack of proper guidance.

In hindsight, I realized the sale of the home was prioritized over my needs. That experience shaped my approach as an agent today. Buying a home isn’t just a transaction; it’s a significant life decision. It’s about finding a place that fits not just your preferences, but your lifestyle, your aspirations, and your practical needs.

Fast forward to the present, and several homes later, my home now accommodates my family gatherings, with space to spare. My open concept floor plan that opens up to my backyard and patio could easily accommodate any gathering I care to host. It’s not about having 60 or 70 people over every day, but knowing that I can if I want to, knowing that my home aligns with how I live my life.

Choosing the right realtor is paramount in this process. It’s about finding someone who listens, who understands your needs beyond the surface level. It’s about asking the tough questions, the ones that delve into how you truly envision your life in your new home. That’s why it’s so important to sit down and really listen to how someone wants to live. I spend more time telling people all the reasons why they shouldn’t go see a house than you might believe. Because I am so in tune with my clients needs are that I know just from the pictures when a house won’t work for them.
